Domestic media hosting program

Full story

Within Australia, Tourism Australia engages local freelance travel and tourism print and broadcast journalists and photo-journalists as well as Australian-based members of the Foreign Correspondents’ Association of Australia and South Pacific to create quality destination editorial for distribution through global media channels.

Freelance Journalists
We commission Australian-based freelance journalists with print and broadcast media experience to create stories on our behalf. These stories are then distributed to international media channels under the Tourism Australia brand, but maintaining your by-line.

A commission may involve travel within Australia or may require desk research and writing only, depending upon our story objectives.Payment for feature articles is negotiated at either the market rate per word or a per article fee. If you are on assignment with Tourism Australia, you may also create additional articles for sale however we will only pay you for the story that we have commissioned.

We have a database of freelance travel and tourism journalists that we work with on a regular basis. If you would like to be considered for our program, you will need to be a full member of the Australian Society of Travel Writers; be able to provide three recent articles published in recognised and reputable media outlet in the last six months or provide references from a recognised travel editor of any major newspaper or magazine.

To also be considered, you must also have an Australian Business Number (ABN).

Foreign Correspondents
We invite members of the Foreign Correspondents Association (FCA), who are permanently based in Australia, to join us on famils throughout Australia. This invitation is initiated through the FCA on our behalf.

We can only provide a commission to FCA members to write articles on our behalf if you have an ABN. If you have an ABN, you may be considered to work with us as a freelance journalist. If you do not hold an ABN, to be part of our program, you will need to have a firm commission with your media channel and provide proof of this assignment.

Any FCA member that applies to travel on a Tourism Australia famil will need to provide their membership credentials. Unfortunately we cannot accept associate members on this program.

Photo-journalists
We commission Australian-based photo-journalists to create editorial and photographic stories on our behalf. We will then distribute your stories to international or local media channels under the Tourism Australia brand, but maintaining your by-line.

Payment for articles and photographs are negotiated at either the market rate per word and photograph, or a per article fee. If you are on assignment with Tourism Australia, you may also create additional articles for sale however we will only pay you for the story that we have commissioned.
