International media hosting program

Full story

Tourism Australia hosts around 870 media representatives each year from almost 30 countries. This includes media from print (trade and consumer) publications, broadcast (free-to-air and cable television and radio) and online channels.

Our preference is to host media channels whose readership or viewership aligns with, and has deep reach into, our target visitors, the experience seeker. While we proactively invite media to travel to Australia as our guest, if you have a compelling story idea, we would also be very interested in hearing from you.

To be considered for our program, you may be a freelance journalist or photo-journalist that works across one or more media channels or you may be employed full or part-time by a media channel.

We would prefer you have a commissioned story angle before you travel to Australia and of course, anticipate that you will create compelling stories that will be published or broadcast within your assigned media channels.

If you are invited to travel to Australia you will be the guest of Tourism Australia. We also work with our State Tourism partners and hundreds of tourism operators to ensure that your visit runs smoothly. During your visit, we may provide an escort or allow you to meet your itinerary obligations independently. This will depend on your needs and the complexity of your itinerary.

During your trip we will endeavor to put you in touch with real Aussies so that you can share their stories and through them, gain an insight into our lifestyle, culture and environment.

Wherever possible we will make every effort to ensure that you can access Australia-wide destinations dependent upon climate and accessibility.

We recognise that you may wish to travel with a partner or friend. Unfortunately Tourism Australia can only make arrangements for you as our invited guest.

If you are travelling to Australia independently, we may be able to support part of your visit via our “partial-assist” program, particularly if you have the capacity to research for, and then produce a destination-styled story about Australia.

The terms and conditions of participation in our program are outlined in our Liability Release Form which you will be required to sign prior to your travel to Australia. You will also be required to provide us with evidence that you have travel insurance.

You may need to obtain a relevant Visa, while broadcast crews may also need to obtain an ATA Carnet.
